Marriage

What is Marriage?

The Catholic Church defines marriage, or matrimony, as the sacred union between a man an woman whereby the two enter into a lifelong, covenantal relationship.

The Sacrament of Marriage

In various Bible passages, marriage is seen as a symbol of the covenant relationship between God and His people.  For this reason, when a marriage occurs between two baptized people, the marriage is a Sacrament.

Marriage Preparation Classes

For reception of any Sacraments, proper preparation is essential.  The Catholic Church mandates that all couples wishing to be married in the Catholic Church attend marriage prep classes.  These are designed to help couples better understand the Sacrament and to prepare them to live out this most important Christian vocation.

Here, at Sacred Heart Rockne, a six-month notice before the wedding day is required to allow time for marriage prep.  The Church requires that all couples wishing to be married in the Catholic Church attend both marriage prep classes and a couples' retreat.
