In the Catholic Church, we believe, as the Creed affirms, in "one baptism for the forgiveness of sins". That means if you were baptized in another Christian faith, we do not not "re-baptize" you when you enter into the Catholic faith.
All water baptisms that use the Trinitarian formula ("I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit") are considered valid baptisms. In the Catholic view, you are already a brother or sister in Christ.
If you are attending RCIA classes with the intention of becoming Catholic AND you have been previously baptized, we will need a copy of your baptismal record.
Technically, we don't need your baptismal record until right before the Easter Vigil. However, we ask that you do this sooner rather than later. It can take time to find or request this document from the church where you were baptized. It is best to try to start on this as soon as possible.
All churches (not just Catholic churches) keep records of the baptisms they perform. So, find out where you were baptized, then call and request the document. We do not need the actual document. A copy or picture is sufficient.
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you just can't find your baptismal record. If this is the case for you, please contact me, Rodney Kadura. There are a few other ways to go about this. I can share the details when we touch base.
